Adults are the biggest costume market and the least adventurous. Witches and vampires are the top two by a wide margin. That is not a problem. It just means the difference is in the details: the hat, the fabric, the makeup.

For women

The romantic-goth vampire is the look of the year. Lace, corset, dark lip. A witch is the safe pick. Medusa is the trend pick if you want people to ask “who are you?” in a good way.

  1. 1

    Victorian gothic vampire gown

    $$CostumeWomen

The romantic-goth look driving vampire searches this year: lace, long sleeves, dark red or black.

Check before buying: Real size chart. These run small through the bust.

  2. 2

    Classic witch costume (women)

    $CostumeWomen

Most-worn adult costume in the US. A dress-and-hat set covers it.

Check before buying: Hat brim. Floppy brims are the giveaway of a cheap set.

  3. 3

    Medusa snake headpiece

    $AccessoryWomenKids

Medusa is the strongest women’s look in the mythology cluster this year.

Check before buying: How the snakes are attached. Wired snakes hold shape, glued ones droop.

  4. 4

    Gothic corset top

    $AccessoryWomen

Wear it over a white blouse and a long skirt you already own. Romantasy on a budget.

Check before buying: Steel or plastic boning. Plastic bends after one night.

  5. 5

    Dolly Parton blonde wig

    $WigWomenAdults

Big blonde wig plus rhinestones = Dolly. One of the easiest celebrity looks.

Check before buying: Volume. Go bigger than you think.

Sizing note: costume brands size small, especially through the bust and shoulders. If you are between sizes, go up. Need more range? See plus-size costumes.

For men

Most men want a costume that takes ten minutes and still gets a reaction. Three that do:

  • Vampire. A good coat is the whole costume. Everything else is black clothes you own.
  • Greek warrior. Tunic and helmet. Strong if you are going with a partner as a god or goddess.
  • Pennywise. The makeup kit is the cheap, effective option.
  1. 6

    Victorian vampire tailcoat (men)

    $$CostumeMen

A good coat is 80% of a male vampire. Add a white shirt and you are done.

Check before buying: Sleeve length. Short sleeves kill the look instantly.

  2. 7

Greek warrior / Odysseus costume (men)

    $$CostumeMen

Tunic and chest armour gets you Odysseus without a full replica.

Check before buying: Armour material. Printed fabric looks flat; moulded foam looks right.

  3. 8

    Corinthian helmet

    $$AccessoryMenAdults

The single item that makes a plain tunic read as “Greek hero”.

Check before buying: Plastic vs metal. Metal looks great and is miserable after an hour.

  4. 9

    Pennywise costume (adult)

    $$CostumeAdultsMen

Welcome to Derry put Pennywise back in the top searches.

Check before buying: Mask vs makeup. Makeup looks far better and costs less.

  5. 10

    Woody costume (adult)

    $$CostumeMenAdults

Dad-friendly. Comfortable enough to walk a full trick-or-treat route.

Check before buying: Vest sizing on plus sizes. Several listings stop at XL.

Accessories that do more than the costume

Fangs that actually fit. A wig with volume. A face paint kit. These change a costume far more than a “deluxe” label.

  1. 11

    Custom-fit vampire fangs

    $AccessoryAdults

Mouldable fangs stay put while you talk and drink. The one-piece plastic ones do not.

Check before buying: Fit kit included (thermoplastic beads). Do a test fit a few days before.

  2. 12

Vampire makeup kit + fake blood

    $MakeupAdults

Pale base, dark lip, blood drip. This is what makes the photos.

Check before buying: Washable blood. Some stain fabric for good.

  3. 13

    Halloween face paint kit

    $MakeupAdultsKids

A good face paint kit covers skeleton, cat, clown and zombie.

Check before buying: Skin-safe certifications and patch test on kids.

1

Office zombie

30 min ~$0

You need

  • Old shirt and tie
  • Used coffee grounds
  • Flour
  • Black eyeliner
  • Scissors

Steps

  1. Nick the shirt at the cuffs and collar with scissors, then tear the rest by hand.
  2. Rub damp coffee grounds into the rips and armpits for that three-weeks-dead grime.
  3. Dust your face and hands with flour, then smudge eyeliner under the eyes and in the hollows of your cheeks.
  4. Loosen the tie, hang a lanyard round your neck and shuffle.

Tip: Remove flour with a dry towel first, water second; the other way round makes paste.

2

Bedsheet toga

10 min ~$0

You need

  • 1 flat sheet (single or double)
  • 3 safety pins
  • A belt or cord
  • Sandals

Steps

  1. Fold the sheet lengthwise so it hangs from chest to knee.
  2. Wrap it once around your body under the arms, starting at your left hip.
  3. Throw the remaining end over your right shoulder and pin it front and back.
  4. Cinch at the waist with the belt and blouse the fabric over it.

Tip: A white or cream sheet reads as Roman; a patterned one reads as “I just got out of bed”.
