Toy Story 5 came out in June, and Toy Story is the family costume of 2026. Not because it is new, but because it scales. Two people, five people, a toddler and a dog: everybody gets a character.

Who wears what

Family member Character Why
Dad Woody Vest + hat. Comfortable for a long walk.
Mum Jessie or Bo Peep Jessie is fun, Bo Peep is easier to wear.
Older kid Buzz The one they want anyway.
Toddler Alien Tiny and adorable.
Grandparent Rex Inflatable, hides everything, gets laughs.

Kids

  1. 1

    Buzz Lightyear costume (kids)

    $$CostumeKids

The one every kid asks for. Deluxe versions have wings that pop out.

Check before buying: Wings attachment. Elastic straps beat velcro on a jacket that moves.

  2. 2

    Woody costume (kids)

    $CostumeKids

Vest, shirt, hat. Works over jeans the kid already owns.

Check before buying: If the hat is included. Some “deluxe” sets leave it out.

  3. 3

    Jessie costume (kids)

    $CostumeKids

The cow-print chaps make it readable from across the street.

Check before buying: Hat sizing. Kids hats on these sets are usually one size.

  4. 4

    Pizza Planet alien (toddler)

    $CostumeToddlerKids

Smallest family member as the alien is the classic Toy Story group move.

Check before buying: Headpiece weight. Toddlers pull off anything heavy in minutes.

Adults

  1. 5

    Woody costume (adult)

    $$CostumeMenAdults

Dad-friendly. Comfortable enough to walk a full trick-or-treat route.

Check before buying: Vest sizing on plus sizes. Several listings stop at XL.

  2. 6

    Buzz Lightyear costume (adult)

    $$CostumeMenAdults

Jumpsuit style is the cheap route, padded chest piece the premium one.

Check before buying: Jumpsuit length. Tall adults should size up.

  3. 7

    Bo Peep costume (women)

    $$CostumeWomen

The blue jumpsuit version from Toy Story 4 is easier to move in than the dress.

Check before buying: Whether the crook is included. It usually is not.

  4. 8

    Inflatable Rex / dinosaur

    $$CostumeAdultsKids

Funny in a group photo, and it hides whatever you wear underneath.

Check before buying: Battery pack type (usually 4×AA) and fan noise.

What I would skip

  • Buzz helmets on small kids. They fog, they bump into things, and they come off in five minutes.
  • Woody without a hat. It is a cowboy, not Woody. Check the hat is in the box.
  • Matching everything. Pick three or four characters. A family of eight in Toy Story looks like a theme park.

Making it last

Toy Story costumes also work for dress-up days, birthday parties and next year’s hand-me-down. If you are spending a bit more anywhere, spend it on the Buzz.

1

Cardboard space-ranger wings

1 h ~$2

You need

  • 1 large cardboard box
  • White, green and purple paint or paper
  • Red tape or marker
  • 2 old ties or wide ribbon
  • Gaffer tape

Steps

  1. Cut two wing shapes about 40 cm long from the box, plus a 20 x 25 cm back plate.
  2. Paint everything white, then add a green and purple stripe on each wing.
  3. Gaffer-tape the wings to the back plate, angled slightly up.
  4. Tape the ties to the back plate as shoulder straps, crossed like a backpack.
  5. Wear with a white top, purple hat and green paper buttons on the chest.

Tip: Keep the wingspan narrower than a doorway, or you will hear about it all night.

2

Paper-bag cowboy vest

20 min ~$0

You need

  • 1 large brown paper grocery bag
  • Scissors
  • Black marker
  • A checked shirt
  • Jeans

Steps

  1. Cut a line up the middle of one wide side of the bag; that is the front opening.
  2. Cut a neck hole in the bottom and an armhole in each narrow side.
  3. Scrunch the bag and flatten it again so it looks like soft leather.
  4. Draw black cow-print patches with the marker.

Tip: Add a paper sheriff star and a thrift-store hat and it reads instantly.

3

Three-eyed alien headband

15 min ~$0

You need

  • A headband
  • A pipe cleaner or strip of card
  • A paper cup or small ball
  • Green paint or paper
  • Green T-shirt

Steps

  1. Paint the cup or ball green to make the antenna tip.
  2. Twist the pipe cleaner onto the middle of the headband and stick the tip on top.
  3. Draw three big eyes on paper, cut them out and tape them to the T-shirt.
  4. Practise saying “oooh” in a small voice.
