Two things are true in Halloween 2026. The classics still win on volume, and the new stuff wins on attention. Witches and vampires are the top two adult costumes in the NRF consumer survey, around 4.8 and 4.2 million people. Spider-Man is number one for kids at about 4.6 million. Then there is KPop Demon Hunters, which nobody had heard of two summers ago and which now tops half the trend lists.

This page is the short version. One section per theme, three or four buys each, and a link to the full list when you need more.

Witches: still the safest adult costume

A witch is the costume you can’t get wrong. Black dress, good hat. That is it.

The hat is where cheap sets give themselves away. A floppy brim looks like a party-store bag. Spend the extra few dollars on a wired felt hat and the rest of the outfit can come from your closet.

  1. 1

    Classic witch costume (women)

    $CostumeWomen

Most-worn adult costume in the US. A dress-and-hat set covers it.

Check before buying: Hat brim. Floppy brims are the giveaway of a cheap set.

  2. 2

    Wide-brim felt witch hat

    $AccessoryWomenAdults

Upgrade the hat and an all-black outfit becomes a witch.

Check before buying: Wired brim, so you can shape it.

  3. 3

    Plus-size witch costume

    $CostumePlus sizeWomen

One of the deepest plus-size categories on Amazon, so you get real choice.

Check before buying: Size chart in inches and stretch. Reviews with photos help a lot here.

Vampires: the romantic-goth version is the one to buy

Vampire searches this year lean hard toward lace, corsets and dark red. Think period drama rather than plastic Dracula. If you go vampire, go that way. The cape-and-fangs version still works for a last-minute night out.

  1. 4

    Victorian gothic vampire gown

    $$CostumeWomen

The romantic-goth look driving vampire searches this year: lace, long sleeves, dark red or black.

Check before buying: Real size chart. These run small through the bust.

  2. 5

    Victorian vampire tailcoat (men)

    $$CostumeMen

A good coat is 80% of a male vampire. Add a white shirt and you are done.

Check before buying: Sleeve length. Short sleeves kill the look instantly.

  3. 6

    Custom-fit vampire fangs

    $AccessoryAdults

Mouldable fangs stay put while you talk and drink. The one-piece plastic ones do not.

Check before buying: Fit kit included (thermoplastic beads). Do a test fit a few days before.

Full list: vampire costumes.

KPop Demon Hunters: the trend of the year

Rumi, Mira and Zoey. If you have a daughter between six and fourteen, you already know. The trio works as a group costume for friends, and the Saja Boys give brothers and dads a way in.

The catch: stock. Kids sizes sell through early, and a lot of adult sets ship from overseas. Order this week or pick something else.

  1. 7

    Rumi costume (girls)

    $CostumeKids

The purple stage outfit is the most recognised of the three. Most kids sets include top, shorts or skirt and leg pieces.

Check before buying: Whether the braid wig is included. Half the listings sell it separately.

  2. 8

    Rumi long purple braid wig

    $WigKidsWomen

The braid does more work than the outfit. Without it, Rumi reads as “purple pop star”.

Check before buying: Heat-resistant fibre if you want to restyle it, and an adjustable cap.

  3. 9

    Jinu / Saja Boys costume

    $$CostumeMenKids

Gives boys and dads a way into a HUNTR/X group without wearing the trio outfits.

Check before buying: Whether the hat is included. It is the part people recognise.

Spider-Man: the kids number one

Brand New Day landed in the summer and Spider-Man is back on top. Classic red-and-blue first, Miles Morales second. For toddlers, skip the full face mask. They won’t keep it on.

  1. 10

    Spider-Man costume (kids)

    $CostumeKids

Number one kids costume in the US this year, boosted by Brand New Day.

Check before buying: Mask eye openings. Some licensed masks are hard to see through after dark.

  2. 11

    Miles Morales costume (kids)

    $CostumeKids

Black-and-red Miles is the second-most requested Spidey suit.

Check before buying: Muscle padding vs flat suit. Padded is warmer.

  3. 12

    Spider-Man costume (toddler)

    $CostumeToddler

Toddler cuts skip the full face mask. Good idea.

Check before buying: Diaper access. Yes, it matters.

Full list: Spider-Man costumes.

Toy Story 5: the easy family costume

Toy Story 5 came out in June, and it is the best family theme this year because everyone gets a character. Dad is Woody, the kid is Buzz, the toddler is an alien. Done.

  1. 13

    Buzz Lightyear costume (kids)

    $$CostumeKids

The one every kid asks for. Deluxe versions have wings that pop out.

Check before buying: Wings attachment. Elastic straps beat velcro on a jacket that moves.

  2. 14

    Woody costume (adult)

    $$CostumeMenAdults

Dad-friendly. Comfortable enough to walk a full trick-or-treat route.

Check before buying: Vest sizing on plus sizes. Several listings stop at XL.

  3. 15

    Pizza Planet alien (toddler)

    $CostumeToddlerKids

Smallest family member as the alien is the classic Toy Story group move.

Check before buying: Headpiece weight. Toddlers pull off anything heavy in minutes.

Full list: Toy Story costumes.

Greek mythology: the Odyssey effect

Nolan’s The Odyssey pushed togas, armour and Medusa up the trend charts. It is a good adult costume because it reads well and still looks decent in photos. Medusa is the strongest women’s version. For men, a helmet does most of the work.

  1. 16

    Medusa snake headpiece

    $AccessoryWomenKids

Medusa is the strongest women’s look in the mythology cluster this year.

Check before buying: How the snakes are attached. Wired snakes hold shape, glued ones droop.

  2. 17

    Greek goddess dress (women)

    $CostumeWomen

White drape plus gold belt: Athena, Aphrodite or Penelope depending on accessories.

Check before buying: Fabric opacity. Thin white polyester is see-through under flash.

  3. 18

    Corinthian helmet

    $$AccessoryMenAdults

The single item that makes a plain tunic read as “Greek hero”.

Check before buying: Plastic vs metal. Metal looks great and is miserable after an hour.

Full list: Greek mythology costumes.

What I would skip

  • Full “deluxe” sets for one night. You pay for pieces you won’t wear: gloves, boot covers, a belt nobody sees.
  • Anything without a size chart in inches or cm. “One size fits most” fits few.
  • Overseas shipping after mid-October. Check the delivery date on the listing, not the “ships in” line.

Short on both? Half of these classics can be built at home for next to nothing: homemade Halloween costumes.

Make it yourself

Homemade versions from the closet, the kitchen and the recycling bin. No sewing machine needed.

1

Bin-bag vampire cape

15 min ~$2

You need

  • 1 black bin bag
  • Scissors
  • 50 cm of ribbon
  • Stapler

Steps

  1. Cut the bin bag open along one side and the bottom so it becomes a flat sheet.
  2. Fold 5 cm over the top edge and staple it to make a channel.
  3. Thread the ribbon through, gather, tie at the neck.
  4. Cut the bottom edge into shallow points so it looks deliberate.

Tip: Use a heavy-duty bag; the thin ones rip before you reach the party.

2

Five-minute black cat

5 min ~$0

You need

  • Black clothes
  • A plain headband
  • A cereal box
  • Black marker or paint
  • Eyeliner
  • Tape

Steps

  1. Cut two triangles from the cereal box, with a 2 cm tab at the base of each.
  2. Colour them black on both sides and fold the tabs.
  3. Tape the tabs around the headband, about 8 cm apart.
  4. Draw a black nose tip and three whiskers on each cheek with the eyeliner.
