If your kid watched KPop Demon Hunters once, they watched it forty times. It is the costume request of the year for girls six to fourteen, and a surprising number of adults are going as HUNTR/X too.

The problem is not finding a costume. It is finding one that arrives on time and looks like the film. Here is how I would shop it.

Who to go as

  • Rumi. Purple hair in a long braid, the leader. Most requested, sells out first.
  • Mira. Tall, red-haired, the cool one. Good when a friend already took Rumi.
  • Zoey. The youngest, looser outfit, the most comfortable to wear all night.
  • Saja Boys (Jinu). The rival boy band. The way in for brothers, dads and boyfriends.

Kids costumes

  1. 1

    Rumi costume (girls)

    $CostumeKids

The purple stage outfit is the most recognised of the three. Most kids sets include top, shorts or skirt and leg pieces.

Check before buying: Whether the braid wig is included. Half the listings sell it separately.

  2. 2

    Mira costume (girls)

    $CostumeKids

The tall, red-haired one. Good pick when a friend already called Rumi.

Check before buying: Fabric on the jacket. Cheap sets use thin satin that wrinkles in the bag.

  3. 3

    Zoey costume (girls)

    $CostumeKids

Easiest of the trio to wear all evening: looser cut, sneakers work.

Check before buying: Size chart in cm, not age. Asian sizing runs one size small.

Adult costumes

Adult cosplay sets are closer to the film than kids sets, but many ship from overseas. Read the delivery date, not the “usually ships” line.

  1. 4

    Rumi costume (women)

    $$CostumeWomen

Adult cosplay sets are cut closer to the film than the kids versions.

Check before buying: Shipping date. Many adult sets ship from overseas and take two weeks.

  2. 5

    Jinu / Saja Boys costume

    $$CostumeMenKids

Gives boys and dads a way into a HUNTR/X group without wearing the trio outfits.

Check before buying: Whether the hat is included. It is the part people recognise.

The pieces that make it

The wig matters more than the outfit. A purple top with the wrong hair reads as “pop star”. A purple braid reads as Rumi from across the room.

  1. 6

    Rumi long purple braid wig

    $WigKidsWomen

The braid does more work than the outfit. Without it, Rumi reads as “purple pop star”.

Check before buying: Heat-resistant fibre if you want to restyle it, and an adjustable cap.

  2. 7

    Demon hunter sword prop

    $PropKidsAdults

Photos look finished with a prop in hand.

Check before buying: Foam or plastic only. Some school and venue rules ban hard props.

Official vs cosplay sets

Official / licensed Cosplay sets
Price $ $ to $$
Accuracy Simplified Closer to the film
Sizing US sizes Often Asian sizing, runs small
Delivery Usually Prime Often 1–3 weeks
Best for Kids, last minute Teens and adults ordering early

Shopping tips

  1. Order now. Kids sizes are the first to go out of stock.
  2. Size up one on cosplay sets. Check the chart in cm.
  3. Check if the wig is included. Most listings: no.
  4. Make it a trio. Three friends in matching outfits is the photo everyone wants.

1

Purple yarn braid

40 min ~$4

You need

  • 1 skein of purple yarn
  • A hair tie or headband
  • Scissors
  • Ribbon or a bobble

Steps

  1. Wrap the yarn around a chair back about 60 times and cut through one end to get long strands.
  2. Tie the bundle tightly in the middle to the hair tie or the back of the headband.
  3. Split into three and braid down to the end.
  4. Tie off with a ribbon and trim the tail even.

Tip: Pin it under the kid’s own ponytail so it hangs from the crown like the film look.

2

Cardboard-and-foil hunter sword

30 min ~$1

You need

  • A long flat piece of cardboard
  • Kitchen foil
  • Black gaffer tape
  • Scissors
  • Marker

Steps

  1. Draw a long curved blade with a short handle and cut it out.
  2. Glue or tape a second layer on the handle for stiffness.
  3. Wrap the blade in foil, shiny side out, smoothing the creases.
  4. Wrap the handle in black tape for grip.

Tip: Round the tip; cardboard still hurts in an eye.
