Witch is the number one adult costume in the US again, around 4.8 million people in the NRF 2026 survey. It is popular for a reason: it flatters every body type, works at any age, and you probably own half of it already.

Classic witch

Long black dress, pointed hat, maybe a broom. The dress can come from your closet. The hat should not be the floppy one from the set.

    $CostumeKids

Pairs with a mum witch costume for an easy matching look.

Check before buying: Tulle skirts are scratchy. Look for a lining.

  2. 6

    Witch broom prop

    $PropWomenKids

Cheap, recognisable, and the one prop kids actually hold onto.

Check before buying: Length. Adult brooms are taller than most kids.

Make it a specific witch

A generic witch is fine. A specific one gets comments.

  • Elphaba. Green face paint, black dress. Wicked fans will know.
  • Practical Magic. Black lace, boots, long hair. Goes with the romantic-goth trend.
  • Hocus Pocus trio. Three friends, three wigs.
  • Kiki. Navy dress, red bow, a black cat plush. Great for kids.

Half a witch is already in your closet. The other half can come from the recycling bin: homemade costume ideas.

Witch + vampire is the classic couple. See vampire costumes.

Make it yourself

Homemade versions from the closet, the kitchen and the recycling bin. No sewing machine needed.

1

Poster-card witch hat

30 min ~$2

You need

  • 2 sheets of black poster card
  • Scissors
  • Tape or hot glue
  • A string and pencil
  • Ribbon

Steps

  1. Roll one sheet into a tall cone that fits your head and tape the seam inside.
  2. Trim the base flat.
  3. On the second sheet, draw a circle 40 cm wide using the string and pencil, then trace the cone’s base in the middle.
  4. Cut out the ring, snip tabs inside the inner circle, fold them up and glue them inside the cone.
  5. Wrap a ribbon around the join.

Tip: Bend the tip slightly once it is dry; a straight cone looks like a dunce cap.

2

Garden-twig broom

20 min ~$0

You need

  • A broom handle or straight stick
  • A big handful of twigs or dried grass
  • Garden string or twine
  • Scissors

Steps

  1. Bundle the twigs around the bottom 20 cm of the stick.
  2. Tie tightly with twine in two places, 5 cm apart.
  3. Wrap the twine several times between the ties to hide the joins.
  4. Trim the bottom of the twigs to an even fan.
3

Bin-bag tattered skirt

20 min ~$2

You need

  • 2 black bin bags
  • Scissors
  • Elastic or a belt
  • Stapler

Steps

  1. Cut each bag into long strips about 5 cm wide, leaving them attached at the top.
  2. Fold the top edge over the elastic or belt and staple.
  3. Layer the two bags so the strips overlap.
  4. Cut the ends at different lengths for a ragged hem.
