A cheap costume looks cheap for one reason: it tries to be a whole outfit. The fix is to spend on one piece that carries the look and build the rest from clothes you own.

Price bands on this page are approximate (Amazon US, at the time of writing). They move daily. Always check the listing.

Under $30: adults

  1. 1

    Classic witch costume (women)

    $CostumeWomen

Most-worn adult costume in the US. A dress-and-hat set covers it.

Check before buying: Hat brim. Floppy brims are the giveaway of a cheap set.

  2. 2

    High-collar vampire cape

    $AccessoryMenWomenKids

Fastest vampire there is. Black clothes, cape, fangs.

Check before buying: Collar stiffness. A floppy collar reads as “bedsheet”.

  3. 3

    Greek goddess dress (women)

    $CostumeWomen

White drape plus gold belt: Athena, Aphrodite or Penelope depending on accessories.

Check before buying: Fabric opacity. Thin white polyester is see-through under flash.

  4. 4

    Ghostface mask + robe

    $CostumeAdultsKids

The fastest horror costume that still reads instantly.

Check before buying: Officially licensed robe. Unlicensed ones are thin.

  5. 5

    Dolly Parton blonde wig

    $WigWomenAdults

Big blonde wig plus rhinestones = Dolly. One of the easiest celebrity looks.

Check before buying: Volume. Go bigger than you think.

Under $30: kids

Licensed kids costumes are often in this range. Check the size chart, not the age.

  1. 6

    Spider-Man costume (kids)

    $CostumeKids

Number one kids costume in the US this year, boosted by Brand New Day.

Check before buying: Mask eye openings. Some licensed masks are hard to see through after dark.

  2. 7

    Rumi costume (girls)

    $CostumeKids

The purple stage outfit is the most recognised of the three. Most kids sets include top, shorts or skirt and leg pieces.

Check before buying: Whether the braid wig is included. Half the listings sell it separately.

  3. 8

    Woody costume (kids)

    $CostumeKids

Vest, shirt, hat. Works over jeans the kid already owns.

Check before buying: If the hat is included. Some “deluxe” sets leave it out.

  4. 9

    Batman costume (kids)

    $CostumeKids

Evergreen top-five kids costume. Cape plus mask, done.

Check before buying: Cape attached at neck only. Velcro neck closures are safer.

  5. 10

    Witch costume (girls)

    $CostumeKids

Pairs with a mum witch costume for an easy matching look.

Check before buying: Tulle skirts are scratchy. Look for a lining.

Under $15-ish: accessory-only costumes

Black clothes + one of these = a costume.

  1. 11

Cat ears, tail & bow tie kit

    $AccessoryWomenKids

Black clothes plus this kit. Done in two minutes.

Check before buying: Clip-on tail vs belt. Belt holds better.

  2. 12

    Devil horns headband

    $AccessoryWomenMenKids

Red outfit, horns. The light-up kind is easy to find in a crowd.

    Check before buying: Battery included.

  3. 13

    Gold laurel crown

    $AccessoryWomenMenKids

Turns any white dress or sheet into a god or goddess.

Check before buying: Bendable metal band, not rigid plastic that snaps.

  4. 14

    Halloween face paint kit

    $MakeupAdultsKids

A good face paint kit covers skeleton, cat, clown and zombie.

Check before buying: Skin-safe certifications and patch test on kids.

Under $50: worth the step up

These are the ones where paying a bit more actually changes the result.

  1. 15

    Victorian gothic vampire gown

    $$CostumeWomen

The romantic-goth look driving vampire searches this year: lace, long sleeves, dark red or black.

Check before buying: Real size chart. These run small through the bust.

  2. 16

    Victorian vampire tailcoat (men)

    $$CostumeMen

A good coat is 80% of a male vampire. Add a white shirt and you are done.

Check before buying: Sleeve length. Short sleeves kill the look instantly.

  3. 17

    Buzz Lightyear costume (kids)

    $$CostumeKids

The one every kid asks for. Deluxe versions have wings that pop out.

Check before buying: Wings attachment. Elastic straps beat velcro on a jacket that moves.

Even $15 too much? You can build a costume from the recycling bin and a bin bag: see DIY homemade costumes.

Out of time as well as budget? Last-minute costumes are mostly in this price range too.

Make it yourself

Homemade versions from the closet, the kitchen and the recycling bin. No sewing machine needed.

1

Bin-bag bat wings

20 min ~$2

You need

  • 1 black bin bag
  • An old black long-sleeve top
  • Scissors
  • Safety pins or gaffer tape

Steps

  1. Cut the bag open into a flat sheet and fold it in half.
  2. Cut a wing shape with three scalloped curves along the bottom edge.
  3. Unfold and lay it over your back with arms outstretched.
  4. Pin or tape the top edge along the sleeves and the middle to the back of the top.

Tip: Pin from the inside of the sleeve so the pins don’t show or scratch.

2

Bathrobe wizard

15 min ~$0

You need

  • A dark bathrobe
  • A large sheet of card or a poster
  • Tape
  • A stick from the garden
  • Cotton wool (optional)

Steps

  1. Roll the card into a cone that fits your head and tape the seam.
  2. Trim the bottom flat so it sits level.
  3. Belt the bathrobe and pick the straightest stick you can find as a staff.
  4. Glue cotton wool on your chin with a bit of lash glue or tape for a beard.
3

Thrift-store creepy doll

30 min ~$8

You need

  • A frilly thrift-store dress or shirt
  • Knee socks
  • Red lipstick
  • Black eyeliner
  • Ribbon

Steps

  1. Put on the dress with knee socks and tie your hair in two bunches with ribbon.
  2. Draw two round pink cheeks with the lipstick.
  3. Paint tiny heart lips and draw lashes below the eyes with eyeliner.
  4. Add a thin crack line from the hairline to one eye.

Tip: Stare without blinking for the photos; that is the whole costume.
