Pumpkin is the number one pet costume again. Hot dog, ghost and dinosaur follow. The best pet costume is the one your pet forgets it is wearing. That means no hats tied under the chin and nothing covering the eyes or ears.

The picks

  1. 1

    Pumpkin costume (dog / cat)

    $CostumePets

Number one pet costume year after year.

Check before buying: Chest measurement, not weight.

  2. 2

    Hot dog costume (dog)

    $CostumePets

Best on dachshunds, funny on everyone.

Check before buying: Velcro under the belly, nothing around the neck.

  3. 3

    Ghost costume (pet)

    $CostumePets

Simple cape style that most pets tolerate.

Check before buying: Eye holes positioned for your pet’s head size.

  4. 4

    Dinosaur costume (dog)

    $CostumePets

Hoodie-style dino with spikes. Doubles as a warm coat.

Check before buying: Hood that does not cover the eyes.

  5. 5

    Spider legs costume (dog)

    $CostumePets

The legs bounce when the dog walks. Great short video.

Check before buying: Leg length vs your dog’s height.

Match your pet with your costume

  • Toy Story family + a dog as Bullseye or Rex.
  • Mandalorian + a small dog as Grogu.
  • Witch + a black cat (the cat can just be itself).
  • Hot dog dog + a ketchup or mustard human.
  1. 6

    Grogu costume (baby / pet)

    $CostumeToddlerPets

Ears and a robe. Works on babies and small dogs alike.

Check before buying: Ear headband fit. Too tight and it comes off in five minutes.

How to measure

  1. Chest girth behind the front legs. This is the number that matters.
  2. Back length from the base of the neck to the base of the tail.
  3. Weight only as a tie-breaker. A 20 lb corgi and a 20 lb whippet do not wear the same size.

Pet costume rules

  • Try it on for a few minutes a few days before. Reward with treats.
  • Nothing around the neck that can tighten.
  • Velcro under the belly beats ties.
  • Take it off as soon as your pet shows stress: tail tucked, freezing, scratching at it.
  • No costume near candles or jack-o’-lanterns.

1

Harness-clip mini cape

15 min ~$0

You need

  • Your pet’s usual harness
  • An old T-shirt or felt scrap
  • Scissors
  • 2 strips of sew-on or stick-on velcro

Steps

  1. Cut a small rectangle that covers the back but stops well before the tail and the legs.
  2. Round the corners and add a felt initial if you like.
  3. Attach velcro to the top edge and wrap it around the back strap of the harness.
  4. Check it lies flat and does not touch the neck, legs or face.

Tip: Let your pet sniff it first, then try it for two minutes with a treat.

2

Cardboard-box photo set

30 min ~$0

You need

  • 1 large cardboard box
  • Markers or water-based poster paint
  • Scissors
  • A favourite blanket
  • Treats

Steps

  1. Cut one side off the box so it becomes a stage.
  2. Paint a scene on the inside walls: rocket cockpit, haunted house, pumpkin patch.
  3. Let the paint dry completely, then air the box for a few hours.
  4. Put the blanket inside, add treats and wait for your pet to climb in.

Tip: The costume is on the box, not the animal: zero stress, best photos.
