Vampire is the number two adult costume in the US this year, about 4.2 million people according to the NRF survey. What changed is the style. Searches lean toward the romantic, gothic version: lace, corsets, high collars, dark red. Less Count Chocula, more period drama.

Romantic goth (women)

The look of the year. A long gown with lace sleeves, or a corset over a white blouse with a long black skirt. Dark lip. Pale skin. A drop of blood at the corner of the mouth.

    Victorian gothic vampire gown

    $$CostumeWomen

The romantic-goth look driving vampire searches this year: lace, long sleeves, dark red or black.

Check before buying: Real size chart. These run small through the bust.

  2. 2

    Gothic corset top

    $AccessoryWomen

Wear it over a white blouse and a long skirt you already own. Romantasy on a budget.

Check before buying: Steel or plastic boning. Plastic bends after one night.

  3. 3

    Plus-size gothic vampire dress

    $$CostumePlus sizeWomen

Plenty of brands now go to 3X–5X in this style.

Check before buying: Stretch panels or lace-up back for an adjustable fit.

Classic vampire (men)

A good coat is the costume. Long Victorian tailcoat, white shirt with a jabot or a loose cravat, dark trousers. Skip the plastic medallion.

    Victorian vampire tailcoat (men)

    $$CostumeMen

A good coat is 80% of a male vampire. Add a white shirt and you are done.

Check before buying: Sleeve length. Short sleeves kill the look instantly.

  2. 5

    High-collar vampire cape

    $AccessoryMenWomenKids

Fastest vampire there is. Black clothes, cape, fangs.

Check before buying: Collar stiffness. A floppy collar reads as “bedsheet”.

Kids

  1. 6

    Vampire costume (kids)

    $CostumeKids

Shirt-vest-cape sets are warm enough for late October.

Check before buying: Fangs for kids: skip the hard plastic, go soft.

Fangs and makeup

This is where vampire costumes are won or lost. One-piece plastic fangs make you lisp and fall out. Custom-fit fangs you mould in hot water stay put all evening.

    Custom-fit vampire fangs

    $AccessoryAdults

Mouldable fangs stay put while you talk and drink. The one-piece plastic ones do not.

Check before buying: Fit kit included (thermoplastic beads). Do a test fit a few days before.

  2. 8

Vampire makeup kit + fake blood

    $MakeupAdults

Pale base, dark lip, blood drip. This is what makes the photos.

Check before buying: Washable blood. Some stain fabric for good.

1

Bin-bag vampire cape

15 min ~$2

You need

  • 1 black bin bag
  • Scissors
  • 50 cm of ribbon
  • Stapler

Steps

  1. Cut the bin bag open along one side and the bottom so it becomes a flat sheet.
  2. Fold 5 cm over the top edge and staple it to make a channel.
  3. Thread the ribbon through, gather, tie at the neck.

Tip: Staple a second bag cut into a tall half-circle behind the neck for a Dracula collar.

2

Kitchen fake blood

10 min ~$1

You need

  • 4 tbsp golden syrup or corn syrup
  • Red food colouring
  • 1 pinch of cocoa powder
  • 1 drop of blue or green food colouring
  • A small jar

Steps

  1. Mix the syrup with red colouring until it is bright red.
  2. Add the cocoa and one drop of blue or green to darken it to a real blood colour.
  3. Thin with a few drops of water if it is too thick to drip.
  4. Dab at the corners of your mouth and let it run.

Tip: Food colouring stains fabric and pale skin for a day; test on a hidden spot.

3

Pale vampire face

15 min ~$0

You need

  • Foundation two shades lighter than you, or a little white face paint mixed in
  • Grey or purple eyeshadow
  • Dark lipstick
  • Black eyeliner

Steps

  1. Even out your face with the lighter foundation, neck included.
  2. Brush grey or purple shadow under the cheekbones and around the eyes.
  3. Line the eyes and smudge the bottom line.
  4. Blot a dark lipstick into the centre of the lips so the edges stay soft.
