Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey came out in July and Greek mythology is back. It is a good costume theme for adults because it is easy to build from parts and it looks better in photos than most store-bought sets.

Characters that read instantly

  • Odysseus / Greek warrior. Tunic, chest armour, helmet. The helmet does 70% of the work.
  • Medusa. The strongest women’s look. Snake headpiece, green or gold dress, stony makeup.
  • Goddess (Athena, Aphrodite, Hera). White drape plus gold. Change the prop to change the goddess: owl or spear for Athena, apple for Aphrodite.
  • Zeus. White toga, grey beard, a lightning bolt.

Women

  1. 1

    Medusa snake headpiece

    $AccessoryWomenKids

Medusa is the strongest women’s look in the mythology cluster this year.

Check before buying: How the snakes are attached. Wired snakes hold shape, glued ones droop.

  2. 2

    Greek goddess dress (women)

    $CostumeWomen

White drape plus gold belt: Athena, Aphrodite or Penelope depending on accessories.

Check before buying: Fabric opacity. Thin white polyester is see-through under flash.

  3. 3

    Gold laurel crown

    $AccessoryWomenMenKids

Turns any white dress or sheet into a god or goddess.

Check before buying: Bendable metal band, not rigid plastic that snaps.

Men

  1. 4

Greek warrior / Odysseus costume (men)

    $$CostumeMen

Tunic and chest armour gets you Odysseus without a full replica.

Check before buying: Armour material. Printed fabric looks flat; moulded foam looks right.

  2. 5

    Corinthian helmet

    $$AccessoryMenAdults

The single item that makes a plain tunic read as “Greek hero”.

Check before buying: Plastic vs metal. Metal looks great and is miserable after an hour.

Kids

  1. 6

    Greek / Spartan warrior (kids)

    $CostumeKids

Kids version usually ships with shield and helmet, which is the point.

Check before buying: Shield size against the kid’s height. Some are comically large.

Build it from parts

A complete Greek costume set costs more than the parts and looks worse. My route:

  1. White or cream dress / long tunic you already own, or a cheap goddess dress.
  2. A gold belt or rope at the waist.
  3. One strong accessory: laurel crown, helmet, or Medusa snakes.
  4. Sandals. Real ones, not the strappy plastic in costume sets.

The only thing to watch is fabric. Thin white polyester goes see-through under camera flash. Wear a slip.

The ancient Greeks wore sheets; you can too. More homemade costume ideas for zero budget.

Group idea

Olympus works as a group: Zeus, Hera, Athena, Poseidon, plus one Medusa to make it interesting. See group costumes or the couples version.

Make it yourself

Homemade versions from the closet, the kitchen and the recycling bin. No sewing machine needed.

1

No-sew bedsheet chiton

15 min ~$0

You need

  • 1 white flat sheet
  • 4 safety pins
  • Gold ribbon or a belt
  • Sandals

Steps

  1. Fold the sheet in half lengthwise and hold it behind you, fold at the top.
  2. Bring both edges forward and pin front to back at each shoulder, leaving a neck gap.
  3. Pin two more points along the shoulders to make sleeves.
  4. Tie the ribbon under the bust or at the waist and let the fabric drape.

Tip: Iron the sheet first; creases are the difference between goddess and laundry.

2

Paper laurel crown

20 min ~$1

You need

  • Green or gold card
  • A plain headband or a strip of card
  • Scissors
  • Glue or tape

Steps

  1. Cut 20 to 24 small leaf shapes, about 4 cm long.
  2. Fold each leaf lightly down the middle so it catches the light.
  3. Glue them in pairs along the band, all pointing toward the front.
  4. Leave a 3 cm gap at the forehead, like the real thing.
3

Tights-snake Medusa hair

30 min ~$2

You need

  • 2 pairs of old green or black tights
  • Newspaper or socks for stuffing
  • A headband
  • Marker
  • Safety pins

Steps

  1. Cut the legs off the tights and stuff each one loosely with newspaper.
  2. Knot or pin the open end and draw two eyes near the toe.
  3. Pin the snakes around the headband, heads pointing in different directions.
  4. Add green eyeshadow and a stony stare.
