Full DIY looks great on Pinterest and takes a weekend you do not have. Full store-bought is fast and often looks flat. Most people should do neither.

The short answer

Buy the hero piece, build the rest. The hat, the wig, the helmet, the fangs. The thing people recognise. Then pull everything else from your closet or a thrift store.

When store-bought wins

  • Licensed kids characters. Spider-Man, Buzz, Rumi. Kids want the logo and the exact colours. You will not out-sew Disney for $25.
  • Inflatables. You are not building a dinosaur.
  • Last week of October. Time is the real cost.
  1. 1

    Spider-Man costume (kids)

    $CostumeKids

Number one kids costume in the US this year, boosted by Brand New Day.

Check before buying: Mask eye openings. Some licensed masks are hard to see through after dark.

  2. 2

    Inflatable Rex / dinosaur

    $$CostumeAdultsKids

Funny in a group photo, and it hides whatever you wear underneath.

Check before buying: Battery pack type (usually 4×AA) and fan noise.

When DIY wins

  • Generic looks. Witch, vampire, ghost, Greek god. You already own black clothes and a white sheet.
  • Celebrity looks. Dolly, Miranda Priestly, Y2K. These are outfits, not costumes.
  • Inside jokes. Bad Bunny’s “grass people” will never be sold in a bag.

The hybrid route, by costume

Costume Buy Build from closet
Witch Wired felt hat Black dress, boots
Vampire Custom fangs, maybe a corset Black outfit, white shirt
Greek goddess Gold laurel White dress, sandals
Medusa Snake headpiece Green or gold dress
Dolly Parton Big blonde wig Denim, anything sparkly
Cat Ears + tail kit All black
  1. 3

    Wide-brim felt witch hat

    $AccessoryWomenAdults

Upgrade the hat and an all-black outfit becomes a witch.

Check before buying: Wired brim, so you can shape it.

  2. 4

    Custom-fit vampire fangs

    $AccessoryAdults

Mouldable fangs stay put while you talk and drink. The one-piece plastic ones do not.

Check before buying: Fit kit included (thermoplastic beads). Do a test fit a few days before.

  3. 5

    Gold laurel crown

    $AccessoryWomenMenKids

Turns any white dress or sheet into a god or goddess.

Check before buying: Bendable metal band, not rigid plastic that snaps.

  4. 6

    Medusa snake headpiece

    $AccessoryWomenKids

Medusa is the strongest women’s look in the mythology cluster this year.

Check before buying: How the snakes are attached. Wired snakes hold shape, glued ones droop.

  5. 7

    Dolly Parton blonde wig

    $WigWomenAdults

Big blonde wig plus rhinestones = Dolly. One of the easiest celebrity looks.

Check before buying: Volume. Go bigger than you think.

The cost question

A hybrid costume usually costs less than a full set and looks better, because the one piece you bought is a good one instead of five mediocre ones. See costumes under $30 for more examples, or last-minute ideas if you are out of time.
