Most costume returns are size returns. Costume sizing is its own system, and it is not consistent between brands. Ten minutes with a tape measure saves a week of back-and-forth in late October.
Adults
Measure, in inches or cm:
- Bust / chest at the fullest point.
- Waist at the narrowest point.
- Hips at the widest point.
- Height, for jumpsuits and bodysuits.
Then:
- Use the listing’s chart, not your usual clothing size.
- Go by your largest measurement. Costumes are rarely stretchy where you need it.
- Jumpsuits (Spider-Man, Buzz): height matters more than chest. Tall people size up.
Kids
- Ignore the age label. Use height and chest.
- Size up one for late-October trick-or-treating, so a hoodie fits underneath.
- Hand-me-down plan? Size up and roll the sleeves.
US vs Asian sizing
A lot of cosplay sets (KPop Demon Hunters, anime) ship from Asia with charts in cm that run one or two sizes small compared to US sizes.
| Label says | Usually fits like (US) |
|---|---|
| Asian L | US M |
| Asian XL | US M/L |
| Asian XXL | US L |
Always convert from the cm chart. If there is no chart, skip the listing.
Pets
Chest girth behind the front legs, then back length. Weight is only a tie-breaker. More in pet costumes.
Before you order
- Check the delivery date, not just “Prime”.
- Check the return window. Some third-party sellers do not accept costume returns.
- Filter reviews with photos and look for people with your measurements.
Plus sizes have their own guide: plus-size costumes. Shopping for kids: kids costumes.
